Chernihiv has declared Monday a day of mourning after a Russian strike on a supermarket killed two people and injured 25, as Romania intercepted an unidentified drone in its airspace for the third time in three days. Russia fired eight missiles and 136 drones at Ukraine overnight into Sunday.
What happened in Chernihiv?
The strike hit the northern city on Sunday afternoon. Clean-up operations at the site were completed by Monday morning, with the casualty toll standing at two dead and 25 injured.
Ukrainian officials said the attack was carried out using a jet-powered drone fitted with a video camera. They argue that the presence of a camera indicates the operator could see the target, making the strike on a civilian facility deliberate rather than an error.
City authorities designated Monday a day of mourning for those killed.
How large was the overnight attack?
Russia launched one Kh-59/69 cruise missile, seven Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles and 136 attack drones across Ukraine overnight from 25 to 26 July, according to the Ukrainian air force.
Regional authorities reported that Russian attacks killed at least seven civilians and injured 58 others over the preceding day. In the Sumy region, guided aerial bombs injured five civilians and a separate drone attack struck a farm, killing livestock. In Kharkiv’s Slobidskyi district, 167 residents received humanitarian assistance after an earlier strike.
The Institute for the Study of War assessed that neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces made confirmed advances on 26 July.
Why is Romania intercepting drones?
A Romanian F-16 intercepted an unidentified drone in Romanian airspace on 26 July, the third such incident in three days. Romania is a NATO member bordering Ukraine, and the repeated breaches have raised concern about spillover from strikes along the Danube.
Analysts also note a shift at sea. The Russian Navy is forming unmanned systems regiments, a move assessed as partly intended to protect vessels from intensified Ukrainian strikes on Russian naval assets in the Black and Azov seas.
President Vladimir Putin used Russia’s Navy Day to project strength and restate territorial claims extending beyond Ukraine.
What is happening diplomatically?
President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting on long-range strikes at which a plan for further deep-strike operations was approved and the list of priority targets updated.
He is expected to meet US President Donald Trump this week. Ukraine’s priority in those talks is air defence, which remains the weakest point in its posture. Trump recently agreed to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot systems, a shift Kyiv has sought for some time.
Zelensky has said missiles for Patriot batteries are the single most urgent requirement.
What is the fallout from the Kyiv region strike?
A Russian missile attack on Friday killed ten people and wounded more than 100 at a defence industry event in the Kyiv region.
The event brought government, military and defence industry figures together in one location, and the decision to hold it has drawn criticism on security grounds.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced a criminal inquiry, saying investigators would establish who authorised the event and whether the risks were properly assessed under martial law.
