The first ODI of Afghanistan’s tour of Ireland was abandoned at Bready. At Dundee, Canada against the United Arab Emirates was called off in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, two days after Scotland against the UAE went the same way at the same venue.

What is Cricket World Cup League 2?
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 is a one-day international competition through which associate nations and lower-ranked full members compete for places in the qualifying pathway to the Cricket World Cup. Matches are played in tri-series blocks hosted in rotation among the participating countries. Because standings are decided on points accumulated across a small number of fixtures, abandoned matches carry disproportionate weight: points are split rather than won, and there is limited scope to reschedule. In early August 2026, two League 2 fixtures at Dundee in Scotland were abandoned without a ball bowled, Scotland against the United Arab Emirates on 3 August and Canada against the United Arab Emirates on 5 August. A one-day international between Ireland and Afghanistan at Bready was abandoned the same week.
Why is scheduling the problem?
Associate fixtures are concentrated in the northern summer because that is when host nations can stage them, and the same window carries the highest rainfall risk in Scotland and Ireland.
Unlike full member tours, these series carry little scope for reserve days. Touring budgets are tight, squads travel for short blocks, and grounds are shared with domestic cricket, so a lost day is usually lost permanently.
The result is that qualification can turn on weather as much as on performance, a criticism raised repeatedly by associate boards.

Ireland and Afghanistan have further fixtures scheduled on the tour. England’s domestic One-Day Cup continued without interruption, with Surrey beating Kent by 95 runs and Hampshire beating Glamorgan by 90.
How much cricket is lost this way?
Abandonments without a single delivery are the most costly outcome. A shortened match can still produce a result under revised targets, but a full washout leaves nothing to calculate.
For the United Arab Emirates the week was a complete loss. Two scheduled fixtures produced two shared points and no cricket, against opponents they would have expected to compete with.
Neither Dundee fixture reached a toss.
