Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is expected to pass The Dark Knight Rises this weekend to become his second-highest grossing film in North America, and to reach $1bn worldwide at around the same time.
The Universal release stood at $344.4m domestically at the end of its second week, with The Dark Knight Rises on a final total of $448.2m.

The Dark Knight remains his highest domestic earner on $535m. Passing The Dark Knight Rises would move The Odyssey into second place ahead of Oppenheimer and Interstellar.
The film has already recorded the best second week of Nolan’s career, exceeding the $112.4m taken by The Dark Knight in the equivalent period.

How much has The Odyssey made?
The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan and distributed by Universal Pictures, had grossed $344.4m in North America by the end of its second week of release in August 2026, with a worldwide total of $666.7m at the eleven-day mark. It is forecast to pass The Dark Knight Rises, which finished on $448.2m domestically, during its fourth weekend, which would make it Nolan’s second-highest grossing film in North America behind The Dark Knight on $535m. The film is also expected to reach $1bn worldwide at around the same point. It has already recorded the strongest second week of Nolan’s career, ahead of the $112.4m taken by The Dark Knight over the equivalent period, and passed the lifetime domestic total of his 2023 film Oppenheimer within thirteen days.
How has it held against Spider-Man?
The Odyssey led the box office for two weekends before Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened. It took $51m in its third weekend, a decline of 43 per cent, which was the shallowest third-weekend drop of Nolan’s career despite facing a record-breaking opening.
Its lowest single day so far came on the Thursday Spider-Man opened, at an estimated $10.2m, down 25 per cent on the previous day.
What about the premium screens?
The Odyssey held IMAX auditoriums through Spider-Man’s opening weekend, which is unusual for a film in its third frame against a major release. It surrendered other premium large-format screens, where grosses slowed.
Those IMAX screens are now being shared with Spider-Man, removing one of the advantages that supported the hold.
What does $1bn mean for the film?
Nolan has reached the billion-dollar mark before, with The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer. Doing it with an adaptation of Homer, shot for a wide release rather than a prestige awards run, is a different proposition commercially.
The worldwide total stood at $666.7m at the eleven-day mark, tracking to cross $1bn in its fifth or sixth frame.
The film also passed the lifetime domestic gross of Oppenheimer within thirteen days of release, a comparison that matters because Oppenheimer was itself an outlier for a three-hour adult drama.
