David Crowley has won the Democratic primary for governor of Wisconsin by fewer than 3,500 votes, defeating the democratic socialist Francesca Hong in a result that reversed a double-digit polling lead and gave the party establishment its first significant win in weeks.
The Associated Press called the race after Hong conceded early on Wednesday. Her margin of defeat was under one percentage point, low enough that she could have requested a recount.
How close was it?
Decision Desk HQ called it at around 2:20am Eastern time with Crowley more than 3,000 votes ahead.
Counting was delayed by about 28,000 absentee ballots from Milwaukee, held up until the early hours after what the city’s election chief described as a human error in uploading data.
Five other Democrats remained on the ballot after withdrawing late. Between them they took more votes than separated the two leading candidates.

Who won the Wisconsin Democratic primary for governor?
David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, won the Democratic primary for governor of Wisconsin held on 11 August 2026, defeating state Assembly member Francesca Hong by fewer than 3,500 votes. The Associated Press declared him the winner early on 12 August after Hong conceded, with the margin under one percentage point. Public polling in the final stretch had shown Hong, a democratic socialist, leading by 18 to 21 points. Crowley had suspended his campaign roughly a month before the primary because of low polling and limited funds, then re-entered days later with the endorsement of outgoing Governor Tony Evers. He is 40 and would be Wisconsin’s first Black governor if elected. He will face Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, endorsed by President Donald Trump, at the general election on 3 November 2026. Democrats have held the governorship since 2019.
What does it mean for the party?
The result runs against a run of progressive wins, including Abdul El-Sayed’s defeat of Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate primary the week before. Crowley’s victory is the first significant win for centre-left Democrats in that sequence.
The narrowness cuts the other way too. Hong told supporters her campaign had built something that would change politics, and the margin suggests a substantial share of Democratic voters wanted the alternative.
On the same night, progressives won the Minnesota Senate primary.
What happens in November?
Crowley, 40, faces Tom Tiffany, who won the Republican nomination decisively. Tiffany represents a rural northern district, is among the most conservative members of Congress by voting record, and voted against certifying the 2020 results in Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Democrats have held the governorship since 2019 and are also seeking to flip at least one chamber of the legislature, which would give them full control of state government for the first time since 2010. The winner will hold the office through the 2028 presidential election.
