Manchester City closed their pre-season with a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday, while Arsenal and Liverpool both lost at home on a day that left the two clubs meeting in next weekend’s Community Shield in contrasting form.

Omar Marmoush scored twice for City after Atletico had led at the interval. Arsenal were beaten by Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates, and Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Monaco at Anfield.

How did City turn it around?

Sixteen-year-old defender Jorge Dominguez put Atletico ahead three minutes before the break at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, poking home from a corner against the run of play.

Marmoush levelled ten minutes after the restart and put City in front two minutes later, both goals created by Antoine Semenyo. Rayan Ait-Nouri added a third late on. More than 50,000 attended.

Manchester City, coached by Enzo Maresca, meet Arsenal in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on 16 August.

What happened at Anfield and the Emirates?

Liverpool led through Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz before Monaco recovered to win 3-2. It was Andoni Iraola’s first match in charge at Anfield, and the first appearance since the World Cup for Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo. Iraola said afterwards that his side could not sustain their level.

Arsenal trailed Dortmund 3-1 after Ethan Nwaneri pulled a goal back, a second successive defeat. New signing Guimaraes was presented to supporters but was not in the squad.

Chelsea drew with Johor Darul Ta’zim in Malaysia to close their own Asian tour, Liam Delap scoring twice from the penalty spot.

What comes next?

City meet Arsenal in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday 16 August, City qualifying as FA Cup winners and Arsenal as Premier League champions. The league season begins the following weekend.

Pre-season results carry no competitive weight, but the fixtures are the last chance to settle selection before matches begin to count. City completed almost two weeks in Asia; Arsenal and Liverpool were playing at home. Both London and Merseyside sides now begin the season having lost their final warm-up.
