Which Walmart pistachio nut butter was recalled?

Botticelli Foods of Melville, New York, recalled one lot of Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter in August 2026 because of possible salmonella contamination. The affected product is a 6.7-ounce glass jar carrying UPC 194346207961 and lot code LB028ACP04, with an expiry date of 28 January 2027. It was sold exclusively at Walmart stores in 19 US states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming. The recall followed testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which found salmonella in three jars sampled at a Walmart store during a routine inspection. No illnesses or injuries had been reported. Consumers are advised not to eat the product and to return it for a full refund.

How was it detected?

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested three jars taken from a Walmart store as part of a routine inspection programme and identified salmonella. Walmart was notified on 17 July.

The product went to stores in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming.

What should consumers do?

Anyone holding a jar from the affected lot is advised not to eat it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Botticelli Foods has published a contact address and telephone line for queries.

Salmonella infection typically causes fever, diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal pain. It can be more serious in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, and in rare cases the bacteria can enter the bloodstream.

Why routine testing matters

The contamination was not found by the manufacturer or the retailer. It surfaced through a state inspection programme that samples products already on shelves, which is how a large share of food recalls in the United States begin.

That model depends on funding and staffing at state agriculture departments, and on the FDA network those departments report into. Recalls are voluntary in most cases, with the agency publishing the notice once a company acts.

Nut butters carry a particular risk because they are not cooked after grinding, so contamination introduced during processing is not eliminated before packaging. Low-moisture foods also allow salmonella to survive for long periods.
