Spider-Man Sets All-Time Box Office Opening Record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day took $168 million at the North American box office on Friday, the biggest single opening day recorded for a domestic release, distributor Sony Pictures confirmed on Saturday. The figure surpasses the $157.4 million set by Avengers: Endgame in April 2019.

The Sony and Marvel Studios film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, played on 4,487 North American screens.

How was the record set?

Variety reported the Friday total included $72 million from previews, itself a record, ahead of the $60 million taken by Endgame. Those previews included Wednesday early-access screenings for Prime Video subscribers, and Thursday showings began at noon rather than the 6pm start used for Endgame, allowing more screenings.

Screen Daily noted that Endgame’s 2019 figure would equate to roughly $205 million in current ticket-price terms, meaning the new record is not adjusted for inflation.

Will the opening weekend record fall?

The weekend record fell. Sunday estimates put the three-day domestic total at $355 million, narrowly behind Endgame, but final actuals came in at $360.1 million, ahead of the $357.1 million taken by Endgame in April 2019. It is the largest opening weekend in domestic box office history.

Endgame retains the global opening weekend record of $1.22 billion. Brand New Day took $572 million internationally for a $927 million worldwide launch, and is the biggest domestic opening in Sony’s history, ahead of the $260.1 million taken by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. It is only the second film to open above $300 million domestically.

How did the wider market perform?

Premium large-format screens accounted for 24 per cent of the film’s weekend gross and 3D for 17 per cent, according to Deadline, which estimated the total North American market at $434 million for the weekend, up 262 per cent on the same frame a year earlier.

Audiences graded the film A on CinemaScore. It holds a 90 per cent critics rating and 98 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Only nine films have opened above $200 million domestically.

The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic for Universal, fell to second place in its third weekend with an estimated $51 million, a drop of 43 per cent, taking its domestic total to about $396 million. Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters and Moana completed the top five.
